Leaving the Table

A short story about my drumset

My drumset

This cheap drum set looks shabby and it probably is. It was originally bought by South African drummer Gilbey Karno (John Mc Laughlin's drummer in London) who was the teacher of Hubert Malik, Christoph Zeitner, Clauspeter Marker and even me. It served at legendary Augsburg Jazz club "Underground", at "Striese", "Lailos", "S'ensemble" and "Mohrenkönig" for the respective Jam Sessions. Ursel Jarach sold it to me in 1997 and Gilbey renovated it for me before his untimely death. The Fiberskyn heads were ordered especially for me from REMO USA, the bass drum beater was bought by me in 1998 in New York. I also inherited an old Turkish Zildjian cymbal from Gilbey that is also strictly not for sale. This drum set was played by Clyde Stubblefield (James Brown) and twice by Lionel Hampton's drummer in the late 80ies, but also repeatedly by a very young Guido May or Rick Hollander or Sunk Pöschl or of course Wolfgang Lackerschmid. I was standing next to Maureen „Moe“ Tucker (Velvet Underground) when someone played on it. It will find some rest now in my attic before I decide to lend it to another young stewart who deserves recognition.
